Brown dog resting in a grass field

Every dog has a lazy day now and then. But sometimes what looks like “just tired” is the earliest sign of something that needs attention. As veterinarians, we’d always rather see a healthy dog than miss an early problem, so here are the signs that mean it’s worth picking up the phone.

They stop eating or drinking

A single skipped meal usually isn’t an emergency, but a dog who refuses food for more than 24 hours, or suddenly won’t drink, is telling you something. Appetite is one of the most reliable windows into how a dog actually feels. Pair it with low energy and it moves up our priority list.

Vomiting or diarrhea that won’t quit

Occasional stomach upset happens. What concerns us is repeated vomiting, diarrhea lasting more than a day, or any blood. Dogs dehydrate faster than people realize, and puppies and seniors are especially vulnerable.

A limp that doesn’t improve

Dogs hide pain well. A limp that lingers past a day of rest, visible swelling, or reluctance to jump and climb stairs all deserve a look. It could be anything from a soft-tissue strain to something that needs imaging.

Trust your gut

You know your dog better than anyone. The classic “something is just off” feeling, whether it’s hiding, unusual clinginess, restlessness, or a change in posture, is real data worth acting on.

  • Refusing food or water for 24+ hours

  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhea

  • A limp that outlasts a day of rest

  • Labored breathing or a persistent cough

  • Any sudden change in behavior or energy

If any of these sound familiar, don’t wait for it to pass. We hold same-day sick appointments six days a week. Call us at (555) 012-3456 and we’ll get your dog seen.
